I'm a 35 year-old guy (July 1970 birthdate), live and work in Toronto, am a VP and general counsel for a film and TV production company, and am married to the most wonderful woman in the world (Jill). The main reason she's wonderful is that she actually tolerates my insane love for DMB baseball simulation (I'm actively involved in 15-17 play-your-games leagues, and 6-7 commish-controlled leagues...so, I'm obviously nuts...), and also has as much of a love as I do for NBA basketball (we have season tickets to the Toronto Raptors, which, of course, isn't anything to brag about). That, and she's cute as a button. My DMB philosophy: Always try and have a solid bullpen, and players with strong OBP. If possible, look for starting pitching that is young with upside. Platoon, platoon, platoon. Also, because I'm in so many leagues, I tend to simulate the 1st 6-7 innings of a game, and then step in for the last 2-3 innings. That actually makes it a lot more fun for me – either to try and protect a lead or to try and catch up. Favorite team: Since I grew up in Montreal, but was born in Philadelphia, my two favorite teams were, naturally, the Expos and the Phillies (I also like the Blue Jays, as I live in Toronto, and the Twins, because I lived for 3 1/2 years in Winnipeg, Manitoba, which had the Twinkies as the closest team, probably). Now, I can't bring myself to cheer for the Nationals - feels like a betrayal. My all-time favorite player is Michael Jack Schmidt, the greatest 3rd baseman who ever lived (don't bring that George Brett crap in MY house). My favorite current player is Vlad "The Impaler" Guerrero, but I also have a soft spot for Corey Koskie, who grew up in Anola, Manitoba. Incidentally, anyone wondering what the Winnipeg Goldeyes are, they are a team in the Northern League, and play in a beautiful modern and open minor league park in Winnipeg. The Northern League helped propel guys like Jeff Zimmerman, Jeff Sparks and Mike Cather to the majors. Greatest baseball memory: Probably when the Phillies won the World Series in 1980. Probably the best LCS ever between the Astros (heck, and the run they had to have at the end of the season to even win the division), and then taking the Royals. Tug McGraw and his energy. Schmidtty's bat. Worst baseball memory: What happened to the 1994 Expos. Argh. Look forward to building a winner in this league. |
